Hau‘oli Lā Ho‘omaika'i ~ Happy Thanksgiving from Our ‘Ohana to Yours

“Wild Dance” by Melody Guini

A Note from Owner Panna Cappelli

I think in Hawaii, we are all grateful for the starlit nights, sunny days, beautiful beaches, waterfalls, and temperatures neither cold nor hot. What I am feeling particularly grateful for right now is the people I am surrounded by. My kids live on my property – a dream of mothers everywhere. My husband loves me and is a wonderful person. My old friends know me well and I’d do anything for them. My workmates are all good people, down to the very last one. The artists I work with are kind, quirky, and honest. My clients come back every year to see me and catch up on what is new. And because I’ve had a space in Makawao town for 36 years, I get to see the same friendly people day in, day out.

I’ve had the same huge Thanksgiving party at my house for over 30 years. In fact, I can’t travel at this time of year because everyone would show up anyway! We’re all thankful for being together at least once a year.

I’m grateful for being surrounded by artists, and forever thankful that I have the privilege of sharing their inspirational works with the world through Maui Hands.

Fresh Faces & Artwork

We’re thrilled to welcome the following new and returning artists to Maui Hands. We hope you enjoy their work as much as we do!

“Outrigger” by Melody Guini

Melody Guini

Melody Guini’s artwork is predominantly inspired by her deep love for Maui and its vibrant natural beauty. Originally from Argentina, the island holds a special place in her heart. She is enamored with the way the four elements —  fire, earth, water, and air — interact perpetually.

The ever-changing ocean, the presence of volcanoes, and the lush mountains are always talking at the moment Melody creates her work, and intuition is her main guide. Textures, colors, and the materials she encounters result in a blend of abstract expressionism and naturalism, each piece telling a unique story.

Blown Glass Wave by Evan Jenkins

Evan Jenkins

“Balancing and controlling a mass of 2000-degree material has always been the true inspiration behind the experience for me. I find it to be a duality of experiences: we create with glass in the molten state, however glass itself can only be tangible in the solid crystal form. The pieces that most reflect my fascination with this concept are the wave sculptures where the glass is literally poured onto the piece to create a fluid motion with the crystal.

“Living in Hawaii has been a great inspiration in the colors I use. The vibrant greens, the deep blues, and fire reds come from the colors that surround me. The forms are created from the visual landscape, and reflect the uniqueness of this place that I call home. Glass itself has an inherent beauty, and through the use of color and form I am creating one-of-a-kind pieces that are a reflection of beauty in the world.”

Larimar Statement Necklace in Sterling Silver by Dr. Joie “Yasha” Taylor

Dr. Joie “Yasha” Taylor

Dr. Joie Taylor, aka “Yasha,” redefines what it means to be a renaissance woman. She traces her trademark style — rare gemstones in surprising settings — to the experiences of her past, explaining that each step she’s made on the map informs her creations. Utilizing hand-selected, responsibly-sourced precious and one-of-a-kind gemstones, her jewelry evokes her history as an engineer, dancer, musician, and healer. Allusions to dance are found in the graceful curves of her art pendants, while her work as a musician is found in her bold stage pieces. Exacting craftsmanship and geometric twists nod towards her years as a metalsmith and scientist. Meanwhile, Yasha’s ongoing work as a healer shapes the greater context of her work, and several pieces in her collection were fashioned with specific restorative qualities.

Yasha’s jewelry exemplifies the modern woman: Powerful and feminine, brave and sensitive, and vibrant and unexpected.

“Golden Hour” Watercolor Giclée Print by Lovisa Oliv

Lovisa Oliv

Lovisa Oliv’s vivid watercolor illustrations embraces a soft fluid stroke with an unruly quality. Stylized characters grace the paper with seemingly effortless movements. Patterns, structures, and texture emerge in layers of playful strokes and colors.

With meticulous attention to detail and careful planning, and by using thoughtful layers of color and luminosity, there’s room for both smoothness and contrast. Imaginative use of negative space, mixing bold surface simultaneously with shades of depth, creates artwork that is soft yet striking with an edge.

Born and raised in Sweden, Lovisa moved on to study fashion design and illustration in Florence, Italy, and later in New York City. Now landed in Hawaii, she brings that work, life, and inspiration balance to create her unique, smooth, and luscious artworks.
